The evolution of privacy on Facebook
While my mind is still fresh on Facebook and its impact on today's culture, I would like to talk about how the privacy at Facebook and its Terms of Service have changed over the years. In this interactive visualization by Matt McKeon, it is shown by year (2005-2010) how much of your personal data is available on Facebook as a default setting. This poses a problem because most of the 500 million do not know how much of their personal information is being sent to advertisers and business due to the default settings. Sure, they have control, but do they know how to control it. The counter-argument is that, does anyone really care?
Please visit McKeon's original blog post for the fully interactive visualization of the above image. It is frightening to see how much of our personal lives is readily available for business people to mine information from.
